Mustangs earn 1-1 draw with Lancers

LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs men's soccer team finished up their opening weekend of action on Sunday afternoon, earning a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the Windsor Lancers at TD Stadium.

"A bit of a slow start in the first half so that's something we'll have to look at as a coaching staff and see what we can do to get the boys playing quicker in the first half so that we get into our game plan earlier," said Mustangs head coach Rock Basacco. "I'm Proud of the second half and how they played. We did create some good chances but also conceded a couple as well."

The Mustangs hold an undefeated record after the opening weekend of the regular season, defeating Waterloo 4-0 on Saturday in the team's season opener. The Lancers now sit at 0-1-1 on the year, falling to York by a 2-1 score in their other contest.

It was a tight battle for the majority of the match with neither team holding a sizable advantage over the other. The Lancers got the scoring underway in the 31st minute off of a goal from Joseph Comaj, while the Mustangs fired back in the 52nd minute when Luke Sewell scored his second goal of the weekend to tie the game. Despite a flurry of scoring chances for both teams in the latter part of the second half the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Ivan Skoko manned the Western net in the tie while Dejo Olagbegi was Windsor's goalkeeper.

Two games into the season Basacco knows that there are still some things for his team to improve upon, but he's happy with the team's play this weekend.

"It's a good start. Obviously we would have wanted six points, but I give credit to Windsor they played a good game. There are things that we need to work on if we're going to keep going further. Again it's just eliminating tendencies we have right now early in the season that we need to change a little bit to get us going in a more positive direction."

The Mustangs are back in action next weekend, first hosting the UOIT Ridgebacks on September 7 at TD Stadium. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
