Mustangs remain undefeated after dominant win over Marauders

LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs men's rugby team kept their undefeated season in tact on Saturday, defeating the McMaster Marauders 32-10 at Alumni Field.

Western now holds a perfect 3-0 record and stand tied with the Queen's Gaels atop the OUA standings. McMaster now drops to 1-2, tied with Brock in fourth.

The Mustangs didn't waste any time as Justin Chan posted a try within the first three minutes of the game to take an early lead. Both teams played a physically intense game and neither squad was able to score until McMaster returned with their first try of the game 25 minutes into the half. The ball moved from end to end as both teams fought to take the lead but it was Western who managed to get ahead after a penalty goal and try cemented the Mustangs lead at 13-5 heading into the half.

The second half started off on a down note for the Mustangs as the Maruaders used their speed to score their second try of the game less than ten minutes into the half. Western didn't wait long to respond however, as James Ojo broke through to score a try less than three minutes later, with Turnbull following up with the convert.

Despite numerous scoring opportunities for the Marauders, the score remained 25-10 in favour of the Mustangs for the rest of the game until a late try and conversion in the last two minutes of the game made it a final score of 32-10.

The Mustangs offence was evenly distributed throughout the game with Chan Ojo, Rory Tomlinson, Eric Selvaggi, and Armin Gurdic all scored tries in the victory.

Although happy with the outcome, Western's head coach Steve Thomas sees many areas for improvement. "A win's a win but we need to work on tackling and managing our gaps midfield," says Thomas. "We didn't communicate enough but we'll get through it and we'll get better."

The Mustangs hit the field again on September 28 to take on the Queen's Gaels in a Homecoming matchup. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Alumni Field.
