Western edged out by McMaster 1-0

HAMILTON, Ont. - A second half goal helped the McMaster Marauders defeat the Western Mustangs men's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at Ron Joyce Stadium.

With the defeat the Mustangs now hold a 3-2-2 record while the Marauders improve to 6-1-1 record two points behind the York Lions for first place in the OUA West Division.

The opening half of the match saw the Mustangs and Marauders battle back and forth with neither side holding a significant advantage. The Purple and White fired off two shots on McMaster goaltender Angelo Cavalluzo, while the Marauders offence was able press past the Mustang defence to get one shot off on Western goaltender Adam Majer before heading into the break.

In the second half Western continued to rack up scoring opportunities with four Mustangs shooting attempts, however the first and only goal of the game was netted by Marauders midfielder Ryan Garnett at the 65-minute mark. Garnett's goal gave the Marauders a 1-0 advantage that they were able to maintain as they shut out the Mustang offence until the clock ran down to zero.

The Mustangs return to action Friday at 8:15 p.m. for a matchup against the top-ranked York Lions in the team's first game on Western's new Huron Flats Field.
