Western posts 3-0 shutout victory over UOIT

OSHAWA, Ont. – A trio of first half goals propelled the Western Mustangs men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over the UOIT Ridgebacks on Sunday afternoon at Vaso's Field.

With the win, the Mustangs now hold a record of 5-3-2 and sit only one point out of fourth place in the OUA West Division while the Ridgebacks fall to 1-9-1 on the year.

In the opening half of the contest the Mustangs dominated the play and created a number of scoring opportunities. Western took an early lead when Fillippo Iuliani netted the first goal of the game at the 10-minute mark. Just nine minutes later the Mustangs furthered their advantage after Aaron Schneebell scored the second goal of the game to secure a 2-0 lead. Western kept the momentum going as Oliver Richardson racked up another Mustang goal just two minutes later to create a 3-0 advantage over the Ridgebacks heading into the break.

The Ridgebacks offence came out strong in the second half and looking to bounce back and cut the Mustangs lead. UOIT was able to force through the Mustangs defence and fire off three shots on Mustangs goaltender Adam Majer while only allowing the Mustangs to create four shots on Ridgebacks goaltender Karan Thaker throughout the second half. Despite stronger pressure from their opponents the Mustangs maintained their lead and claimed a 3-0 victory.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Wednesday, October 2, when they travel to Windsor to face the Lancers at 8:15 p.m.
