Mustangs fall to Marauders in five sets

Box Score HAMILTON, Ont. - After a successful performance at the York Excalibur Volleyball Classic over the Christmas break, the Western Mustangs men's volleyball team continued their regular season on Friday playing against the McMaster Marauders at Burridge Gymnasium in Hamilton. Despite battling back from a two set deficit, the Mustangs fell in five sets with set scores of 24-26, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 10-15.

The Western squad, currently ranked second to McMaster in the OUA standings fought a competitive match to kick off the second half of the season. Although they played competitively against the Marauders, the home side edged out the Mustangs, converting 32.8% of their kill attempts compared to a 27.9% kill rate for the purple and white.

The first set remained close, but with only 12 kills to McMaster's 13, the Mustangs fell short losing the set 24-26. The second set was another close affair with McMaster coming out on top 25-22, however Western picked up the momentum for the third and fourth sets winning each one 25-23. Both teams battled for the fifth set, yet the Marauders came out on top winning 15-10.

Garrett May led all Mustangs with 16 kills and six digs and fellow Mustang Luke Sim added 16 kills and five digs. Phil James put up an additional 15 kills.

Veteran Marauder Jori Mantha led the McMaster offence with a total of 20 kills, and Pawel Jedrzejewski led their defence tallying 11 digs.

The Mustangs return home to play on Saturday, January 11 at 7:00 p.m., hosting the Windsor Lancers at Alumni Hall and fans from around the world can watch live on Mustangs TV.
