Kendra Broad's late goal lifts Western over Blues

TORONTO – The Mustangs women's hockey team extended their winning streak to eight consecutive game on Saturday afternoon after edging the Toronto Varsity Blues 2-1 on the road.

With the win, the Mustangs now hold an 8-0-1 record and maintain their place atop the OUA standings, while the loss for the Blues now moves the team to a 5-3-0 record on the season so far.

Both teams came out onto the ice in the opening period looking to take control of the play and although the purple and white outshot the Blues nine-to-four, it was the blue and white who got to the scoreboard first as the Blues' points leader, Kristi Riseley put the puck past Mustang goaltender, Kelly Campbell to give the Blues a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

With the advantage, the Blues returned to the ice determined to maintain their lead over the Mustangs. The blue and white fired off 11 shots on Campbell but to no avail as the veteran netminder stopped all shots on net.

Despite the Blue's offensive assault on the Mustangs, the purple and white were able to even out the scoreboard as Katelyn Gosling found the back of the Blue's net to send the match into the break 1-1.

The Mustangs dominated the third frame, as the team put on some strong offensive pressure in the Blues end of the ice. Although the purple and white outshot Toronto eight-to-three, the Blues' goaltender, Nicole Kesteris, guarded the goal line intensely for much of the action.

As the contest entered into the 18th minute, and both teams with one point on the scoreboard, the match looked like it was headed into overtime action. That was, until, the Mustangs' Kendra Broad racked up her ninth goal of the season with only a minute and 38 seconds left in the contest, to give the purple and white the one point advantage.

With less than two minutes left in the action the Blues were unable to make up the point and the Mustangs walked away with the 2-1 victory and their eight consecutive undefeated match.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Sunday, November 16 as they face-off against the Ryerson Rams on the road. Puck drop is set for 2:30 p.m.
