Mustangs downed by Rams in Toronto

TORONTO — The Ryerson Rams put together three solid sets on Friday night, recording kill percentages over .500 in all three of the sets they won to defeat the Mustangs 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 25-12, 25-14) at the Coca-Cola Centre.

Western entered the game with a record of 4-4 looking to snap a four game losing streak, while Ryerson sat in third place at 6-3. With the win, the Rams remain in third place ahead of York— while the Mustangs are tied for sixth in the OUA standings.

Robert Wojcik, Alex Dawson, and Lucas Coleman each hit double digits in kills for the Rams on the night, as Wojcik had a team-high 14 kills while Dawson and Coleman were right behind him with 13 apiece. Wojcik and Dawson also led the team with six digs apiece.

For the Mustangs, Justin Scapinello led the way on the attack and on defence, putting up a team-high 12 points, while also leading the team with 11 kills and nine digs. Gavin Taylor and Mike Choja each had six kills while Matt Silver turned in a good defensive performance with seven digs.

Western found themselves behind early in the first set and were unable to recover, as the Rams got a pair of service aces from Robert Wojcik to make the score 7-3 and didn't let the Mustangs back in. Ryerson's registered a game-high .579 kill percentage in the set to go with 12 kills, while Western had a game-low 20 total attacks and seven kills.

The Mustangs would come out swinging in the second, grabbing the first point on a service error from Dawson and only giving up the lead twice after that on their way to a 25-23 win. Their strong play showed up on the stats sheet, as Western nailed down a game-high 14 kills and a .333 kill percentage while Ryerson had their lowest kill percentage of the game at .263.

After that, Ryerson would regain control, registering a .565 kill percentage in the third set with a game-high 14 kills before finishing the match in the fourth set with their highest kill percentage of the game at .632. The Mustangs, on the other hand, had seven kills in both the third and fourth set while finishing the game with nine errors in the final set.

Western will be back in action tomorrow night, when they'll face off against the Toronto Varsity Blues. The Varsity Blues are currently three spots lower than the Mustangs at ninth in the OUA, although they'll be coming in fresh off of a win against Windsor on Friday. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
