Western Mustangs goaltender
Josh Unice has signed a contract with the Gwinnett Gladiators as announced by the team earlier this morning.
The Gladiators are members of the ECHL, the nation's premier "AA" hockey league and are affiliated with the Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL. All home games are played at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Georgia.
Unice, from Toledo, Ohio, joins the Gladiators roster immediately after helping to lead the Mustangs to first place in the OUA West division for the fifth consecutive season. In the final season of his CIS career the fifth-year senior posted a 16-4 regular season record that included one shutout, a 2.56 goals against average, and a .927 save percentage, earning him a spot as an OUA West first team all-star and the division's top goaltender award.
In five seasons with the Mustangs Unice posted an impressive 59-21 regular season record, including seven shutouts, with a career 2.47 goals against average and a .922 save percentage. He was equally as impressive in the post-season, registering a 14-7 record with one shutout, and posting a 2.23 GAA and a .926 save percentage. He is a three-time OUA all-star, earning first team honours in 2014 and 2012, along with a second team selection in 2013.
A former third-round draft pick (86th overall) of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Unice has previously attended training camp with the Blackhawks in 2007 and with the Atlanta Thrashers in 2009, as well as with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2013. Prior to his CIS career, he was a member of the 2009 Memorial Cup Champion Windsor Spitfires as well as a member of Team USA in the 2009 World Junior Championships.
