GUELPH, Ont. – A pair of late goals, including one in the 90th minute, handed the Western Mustangs men's soccer team their second defeat of the weekend as they lost 2-1 to the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday afternoon at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
Â
With the loss the purple and white now sit in third place in the OUA West Division with a 4-2-1 record, while the Gryphons take possession of second place and sit at 4-0-2 on the year.
Â
In the first half the Mustangs claimed an early lead, with
Oliver Richardson netting a goal at the 15-minute mark for his first marker of the season. For the remainder of the first half the purple and white offensive unit would continue to pressure the Gryphons defence placing multiple shots on net, however goalie Benjamin Caranci would not let the Mustangs increase their lead.
Â
With the scoreboard sitting at 1-0 at the beginning of the second half, the Mustangs opened the second 45 minutes of play strongly, continuing to hold off the Guelph attack. However, the Gryphons began to gain momentum later on in the half with Estevan Carles tying the game at 1-1 at the 74-minute mark. The dying minutes of the game were a battle with both sides looking to come out with a win. Right when it appeared that the game would end as a tie, Tim Flynn netted a goal in the final minute to allow Guelph to come away with the victory.
Â
The Mustangs will look to rebound on Friday, September 19 when they host the Windsor Lancers. Game time is set for 8:15 p.m. at Mustangs Field.Â
