HAMILTON, Ont.- Western's open ultimate frisbee team kicked off their season with four wins and three losses on their way to a 4th place finish in Hamilton on September 27 and 28.
Â
Starting slow on Saturday with a 15-9 loss to University of Toronto, Western made adjustments and came back strong with a solid performance against McMaster for a 13-9 victory. The game started gritty with a lot of back and forth, but the Mustangs closed out the half with a circus catch from captain David Lundy off of a late in the stall count blade from first year player Geoff Seeman to deflate a McMaster comeback. The Mustangs never looked back, finishing off the game with a 13-9 victory, followed up with a 15-8 win over a gritty Waterloo B team to make it into the elimination bracket.
Â
The Mustangs started slow again on Sunday, dropping their quarterfinal game 14-7 against the eventually tournament winners Waterloo A. After a comfortable win against the Ottawa Geegees, Western came out hot against Toronto with stellar defensive play from second year handler Vincent Wang to take an early lead. Out of second half cutter Matt O'Brien came down with two ridiculous skies over Toronto's team Canada players Nathan Hirst and Hugh Knapp to put the game away. In the game for bronze, Western ran out of gas and ended up dropping the game 9-2 to a deep Guelph team.
Â
The Mustangs get a short break but are back in action Saturday, October 4 in Kingston, Ontario. The purple and white are looking to build on their early success, as well develop a talented and athletic rookie class to earn a bid to the Canadian Championships in Montreal on Saturday, October 18
