Box Score 4 LIVONIA, Michigan – Over the weekend the Mustang women's volleyball team competed in Madonna University's 2014 Julie Martin Memorial Classic, finishing with two wins and two losses.
Mustangs head coach Melissa Bartlett was impressed with her team's success over the weekend.
"Our young athletes played extremely well against teams who had already been training for over a month," Bartlett said. "It was a successful tournament to finish 2-2, we gained valuable experience and the exciting potential of our rookie class was demonstrated."
Freshman Kelsey Veltman led the team in total points averaging 2.65 points per set and a tournament total of 29.5 points, earning her a place on the All-Tournament Team. Other point leaders include Aja Gyimah who averaged 3.6 kills per set, Alana Gyemi who averaged 3.2 digs per set, Daniell Grasman, who led the team in attack efficiency with a .301, and Katherine Tsiofas, who led the team with 82 assists and 7 service aces.
In the first game of the tournament, the Mustangs lost to Madonna University 18-25, 22-25, and 20-25, in a game that saw both teams struggled to maintain the lead. Later in the day, Western defeated Purdue North Central in four sets. After losing the first set, Western rallied to take control of the game and win the final three sets 25-20, 25-19, and 25-18.
In the final game of pool play, Western lost to Lewis-Clarke in four hard fought sets. After losing the first set 18-25, the Mustangs refocused to win the second set 26-24 but Lewis-Clarke would prevail, bouncing back to win the next two sets 25-8, and 25-19.
During crossover play the Mustangs defeated Rochester College in four sets. Western took the first two sets 25-23, and 25-11, but dropped the third set 28-20. The Mustangs refocused to take the fourth set 25-18.
Western will take to the court next against Niagara at Alumni Hall, September 27. Game time is set for 6:00pm.
