The Mustangs women's hockey team picked up a pair of home ice victories last weekend as they downed the Laurentian Voyageurs 3-1 on Saturday before edging out the Nipissing Lakers 3-2 in a shootout round.
With the wins the Mustangs maintain their place atop the OUA standings with a record of 14-0-2.
Last weekend's contests marked the second time that the Mustangs have faced off against the Voyageurs and the Lakers this season after the purple and white earned a 5-2 and 2-1 victory against the two teams respectively in week three of OUA action.
In Sunday's match-up against the Lakers the Mustangs found themselves skating on thin ice as the highly aggressive blue and white made a two point come back in the second period to even up the score, while the purple and white found themselves in the penalty box for half of the second period. The final decision came down to a shootout where Mustangs veteran goaltender Kelly Campbell proved once again why she is the best goalie in the league; stopping all three Nipissing shooters to lead the purple and white to victory.
Campbell has been nothing short of incredible this season and this is reflected on the OUA leaderboard: the St. Thomas, Ont., native ranks first in the league in both save percentage and win percentage with .947 and .857, respectively. Campbell also holds the second place spot in the OUA for both total saves and goals against average with 341 and 1.33, respectively.
Mustangs power forward and team point leader
Kendra Broad returned to last weekend's regular season action on a strong note as the Petrolia, Ont., native racked up two goals and three assists on the weekend. Broad has been a key contributor to the Mustangs all season and leads the team in both goals and points with 11 and 19, respectively. Broad has also proven to be one of the top players in the league as she ranks second in the OUA for both goals and points as well as second for power play goals with five.
"It's not just the way she plays on the ice it's her leadership in the dressing room, and her demeanour. She's just the kind of person you want [on a team]" said Mustangs head coach Chris Higgins on Broad's success with the Mustangs so far this season.
Western vs. Windsor – Saturday, January 17 at 4:00 pmAfter opening the second half of their season on home ice at Thompson Arena last weekend, the Mustangs will now take to the road to face off against the Windsor Lancers.
The Lancers enter Saturday's action coming off of a split performance last weekend where they defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs 5-4 before falling to the Nipissing Lakers 4-3. With the win and the loss the Lancers now hold a 10-2-4 record, good for third place in the OUA standings.
The Lancers have a number of key players that have contributed to the team's success this season, including goaltender Marissa Kosovski who ranks third in the OUA for total saves with 335.
In addition to Kosovski the Lancers also have an arsenal of forwards such as Krystin Lawrence, who is tied for third place in the OUA for total goals with eight, and teammate Natalie Barrette who is third in the league for assists with 10.
With Kosovski holding the goal line and a number of strong forwards up front the Mustangs will have to perform well at both ends of the ice in order to pick up a three-game winning streak this weekend.
