Preview: Western hosts Lakehead and Brock at Alumni Hall

As part of Mustang Days, Western's women's volleyball team will host both Lakehead and Brock at Alumni Hall over the upcoming weekend.

Coming off two consecutive five set losses, Western is looking to prevent a lengthy losing streak and break free from their three-way tie with Waterloo and Windsor for fourth place in OUA West.

Currently holding a 4-11 record, the Mustangs average 11.08 kills per set with a .167 hitting percentage. With 2.08 blocks per set, Western has consistently proven that their strength lies at the net.

In the backcourt, liberos Courtney Sestric and Emma Cully have helped the team average 12.74 digs per set.

First year middle Kelsey Veltman leads the Mustangs in total points, having recorded 231.5 across fifteen matches with a team high average of 3.7 points per set. Veltman also leads CIS women's volleyball in total solo blocks, with a total of 39.

Fellow rookie Aja Gyimah has been on a hot streak lately, averaging 2.8 points per set.

Stuck in a four match losing streak and holding a regular season record of 2-12, the OUA West seventh place Lakehead Thunderwolves will be anxious for a win to improve their record for playoffs.

Averaging 15.17 digs per set, the Thunderwolves are prepared to challenge the strength of the Mustangs at the net with tight defensive coverage. With 10.4 kills per set, a .115 hitting percentage, and 1.43 blocks per set, they're also primed to match the purple and white net play.

Left side attacker Jen Casey leads the Thunderwolves in points, averaging 3.5 per set. Kailan Robinson and Jasmine Fox follow behind with an average of 2.4 points each.

Senior libero Breanna Hilhorst is a lone wolf on the CIS leaderboard as the only representative from Lakehead. Hilhorst sits in seventh place for digs per set, with an average of 4.25.

The match is scheduled to begin at noon at Alumni Hall, with online streaming available at OUA.tv.

Western vs Brock – Sunday February 1 at 1pm – Watch live at OUA.tv

Sitting comfortably in third place within OUA West with a 7-9 record, Brock is looking for a repeat of their November match against Western when they swept the Mustangs in three sets.

Averaging 10.27 kills per set with a .129 hitting percentage and 1.93 assists per set, the Mustangs have a slight offensive slight edge over the Badgers. However, with an average of 15.70 digs per set, Brock has the Mustangs beat in the backcourt.

Leading the team is Renee Helmer, who averages 3.5 points per set. Behind her are Maddie Brown and Stacie Thomas, who average 2.4 and 2.3 points respectively.

Representing Brock on the CIS boards are Karlinna O'Leary, and Lauren Stirling. O'Leary, a third year libero, sits in first place for both digs per set (5.42) and total digs (325). Stirling, the Badger setter, sits in third place for total service aces (36) and first place in service aces per set (.61).
