TORONTO – A four-goal second half helped the York Lions hand the Western Mustangs men's soccer team a 4-0 loss on Sunday afternoon at York Stadium.
The Mustangs record is now 4-7-4 while the Lions sit at 11-1-2, placing them in sixth and second, respectively, in the OUA West Division.
It didn't take long after the start of the second half for York to break the game wide open. Two minutes in, Jarek Whiteman netted one for the home team, and two minutes after that he struck again, scoring another to give the Lions a two goal lead. The former CIS champions didn't hold back, tallying another goal at the 55-minute mark and a final one at the 76 minutes.
During the first half of the game, neither team was able to net a ball. Just three minutes in the Mustangs had an opportunity that almost allowed them to get an early lead as striker Taso Busjouves took a shot on the York net, but luckily for the home team the ball was stopped by the crossbar.
Western took four shots in the opening half, each of them on goal but none of them successful. York took twelve, but only a third of those were on target, and Western's
Ben Cowman stopped all of the York chances.
Western got another four shots off in the second half, but unfortauntely for the purple and white, they could not get past York goalie Colm Vance.
The Mustangs will face the first-place Windsor Lancers in their final game of the regular season on Sunday, October 25. Game time is at 3:15 p.m. at Alumni Field in Windsor.
