Mustangs advance to quarterfinals after 2-2 draw against Lancers

WINDSOR, Ont. – The Mustangs closed out their regular season on Sunday afternoon, playing to a 2-2 draw against the Windsor Lancers at Alumni Field.

Western finishes the season in fifth place with 17 points and a 4-7-5 record, setting them up to face the fourth place Guelph Gryphons in the OUA Quarterfinals. Windsor finishes the season in second place behind the York Lions. They have 38 points and a 12-2-2 record.

The Lancers came back from a one point deficit not once, but twice on Sunday afternoon. 12 minutes into the game Mohammad Nefar was able to net the first goal for Western.

The purple and white held a tight offense and edged into the Lancers end, tallying nine shots, with four hitting the net. However, the Lancers accuracy proved to be better, as four of their four shots hit the net

The Mustangs held the Lancers off for most of the first half until Lancer, Damon Johnson, found the back of the net a few minutes before the halftime whistle.

Starting the second half, Parker Seymour put the Mustangs ahead again at the six minute mark. However, the lead was short-lived, as Lancer, Iyowuna Jumbo, netted a goal to tie the game just two minutes later.

With the game posing as the last chance for each team to get some points for regular season play, the match was expected to be tight.

Unlike the first half, the Lancers were able to rack in more shots than the Mustangs. They hit the net seven times compared to Western's three. Ben Cowman was able to make a cool six saves for the Western Mustangs.

Western now gets set for an OUA Quarterfinal match-up against the Guelph Gryphons. Check back to westernmustangs.ca tomorrow when the full playoff schedule will be released.
