Western eliminated from OUA playoffs by Guelph

Box Score GUELPH, Ont. – A trio of second half goals led the Guelph Gryphons to a 3-0 win over the Western Mustangs men's soccer team on Wednesday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. With the loss the Mustangs have been eliminated from the OUA playoffs, while the Gryphons will move on to the OUA Quarterfinals on Sunday against an as yet-to-be-determined opponent.

The entirety of the game's offence came in the final 45 minutes with the Gryphons scoring goals at the 57, 74, and 81st minute marks. Fourth-year defender Justin Springer netted the first and third goals of the night to match the two goals he scored throughout the regular season. Atchuthan Sivanathan potted the game's second goal, his fourth marker since the start of the 2015 regular season.

Neither side was able to generate many opportunities in the first half with Guelph recording the lone shot on net through the opening 45 minutes, a shot that was turned aside by Western netminder Ben Cowman.

The second half saw more chances on both sides, with Western three shots on goal compared to four for the Gryphons, alongside two corner kicks for both teams.

Springer opened things up in the 57th minute, netting what would prove to be the game winner, off of an assist from midfielder Ethan Danielli. Sivanathan added the insurance marker a little less than 20 minutes later before Springer rounded out the scoring thanks to another assist from Danielli to give the Gryphons a 3-0 win.
