Mustangs fall to Lions for second loss of the season

TORONTO - A single goal against in the second half caused the Western Mustangs women's soccer team to fall 1-0 to the York Lions on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams remain in the same positions in the OUA West standings following the match. Western stays in second place with a 10-2-3 record, and York stays in first with a 13-0-1 record. York's only draw was one against Western from a few weeks ago on the Mustangs Homecoming Weekend.

The game's lone goal came just over 10 minutes into the second half courtesy of the reigning OUA West MVP Nour Ghoneim. The striker converted a corner kick from midfielder Sarah Wong to give the Lions the lead, one that they wouldn't relinquish.

With the two top teams in the OUA West facing each other, the game was tough as expected. Prior to the York goal, both teams took turns controlling the ball and taking shots on their opponents, but no attempts were sufficient enough to lead to a goal.

The Mustangs were given a good goal opportunity nineteen minutes in when they earned themselves a corner kick. Angelika Mihalopulos took the ball and sent it to Jenna White. White met it with her head, but York goalie Taylor Grant shut down the header with a save.

The score was 0-0 heading into half, causing lots of pressure as the top teams fought to be the best. In the second half, the Mustangs outshot the Lions seven shots on net to four. They tried to make up for the goal against, but they could not get past Grant.

The Mustangs have only one regular season game remaining on their schedule a road contest against Windsor on Sunday, October 25. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
