Western downs Brock 38-18 in penultimate game of the season

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The Mustangs extended their winning streak to three games on Saturday afternoon with a 38-18 defeat over the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines.

With seven new starters in the line up, the purple and white found success early on. Stratford, Ontario native Joshua Bald opened the scoring with a try, followed by a successful conversion from fourth-year veteran Mark Denton.

The Badgers then continued to pressure the purple and white offensively, which led to their capitalization on Western's failed clearance kicks. Brock scored five points on an un-converted try.

However, the Mustangs answered right back to increase their lead 14-5 thanks to Victoria, BC native Thomas Mirmotahari's try combined with Denton converting for two more points.

The eventful first half capped off with another try from Issac Butler to close out the half with a score of 19 - 8 in Western's favour.

Brock evidently regained their composure during halftime as the Mustangs could not immediately respond to their eight-straight penalty kicks, allowing them to close the gap to just one. But with the help of fresh bodies, Western regained their composure and Bald scored his second of the game.

Veteran's Mike Turnbull and Glen Thomson-Bullock led the final charge for the Mustangs, both scoring while Denton converted for extra points. Those plays helped Western rounded out the game with a final score of 38-18.

The purple and white look to add to their 6-1 record this upcoming weekend as they close out their regular season schedule against the Waterloo Warriors. The Mustangs travel to Waterloo this Saturday for a 3 p.m. matchup on Columbia Ice Field.
