Mustangs close out regular season with victory over Waterloo

WATERLOO, Ont.  – Riding the momentum from an early lead, the Western Mustangs closed out their regular season with a 29-3 victory over the Waterloo Warriors at Columbia Ice Field on Saturday afternoon.

The win puts Western behind only Guelph and Queen's as they head into playoffs with a 7-1 record, while Waterloo's 1-7 record puts the team in eighth.

Cole Sopik topped both sides of the scoresheet, recording two tries for the Mustangs. Marshall Hogarth, Michael Di Nino, and Thomas Mirmotaha each added another try to the board for Western, while Fredrico Cisneros Sanchez put up two successful converts.

The Mustangs opened up the game strong, recording three tries one and one successful convert in the first forty minutes while keeping the Warriors off the scoresheet entirely.

Returning to action after halftime, the Mustangs continued to dominate the field. Adding another two tries with one accompanying convert, they continued to run through the black and yellow defense.

Unable to find holes in the tight Mustang line, Waterloo's only points of the day came from a successful penalty goal from Paul Schroeder.

Western will be back on the field for OUA Quarterfinals on Wednesday, November 4. Check back to westernmustangs.ca on Monday when the full playoff schedule is released.
