Kipfer's hat trick leads Western over Laurentian

SUDBURY, Ont. – Tia Kipfer's first career CIS hat trick lead the Western Mustangs women's hockey team to a 4-0 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday afternoon at the Countryside Arena.

With the win Western moves to 4-3-0-0 on the season, while Laurentian sits at 1-2-4-1.

Katie Jacobs got the win in net for Western, shutting out the Voyageurs with a 28 save performance, a new career high for the netminder. Laura Deller suffered the loss for the home side, stopping 21 of 24 shots sent her way.

Kipfer found the back of the Laurentian net in each of the game's three periods to record her second, third, and fourth goals of the season. The three goal performance makes Kipfer the team's leading goal scorer so far this season, and puts her into a tie for first in the OUA and a tie for sixth on the CIS leaderboard.

The Stratford, Ont., native opened the scoring a little over six minutes into the opening frame, converting assists from Nicole French and Brianna Iazzolino to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.

She then extended that lead to 2-0 late in the second period, off of an assist from Edie Levesque. The helper was the first point in Levesque's CIS career, coming in only her sixth game as a Mustang.

Western continued their scoring outburst in the third period, however it was Stacey Scott who marked her name on the scoresheet, thanks to assists from Lyndsay Kirkham and Nicole French.

Down by three goals, the Voyageurs pulled Deller from the net with a few minutes left on the clock, allowing Kipfer to complete the hat trick with an empty net goal at 16:49 of the third period to give Western a 4-0 win.

The Mustangs, and the rest of the OUA, will take next week off before the purple and white return to the ice on Saturday, November 14, for a road game against Brock. Game time is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
