WATERLOO, Ont. – The Mustangs winning streak came to a close this Sunday afternoon after a tight match-up against the Laurier Golden Hawks. An early goal for Laurier was the only ball to find the back of the net, resulting in a final score of 1-0.
The loss puts the Mustangs into third place in the OUA West division with an 8-1-3 record and 27 points. While the Golden Hawks remain in second place with a 9-1-1 record, and one point ahead of Western with 28.
11 minutes into the first half, Laurier striker Gagan Parhar put the ball behind
Tori Edgar for the first and only goal of the game.
Laurier may have netted an early goal, but that didn't stop Western from keeping the pressure on the Golden Hawks. The game was evenly matched with the purple and white having two shots on net in the first half, and Laurier with three shots on Edgar. Fortunately, for the home team, one of those chances found its way to the back of the net.
Down by only one to their rivals, the Western Mustangs went into the second half with the aim of tying up the score. Unfortunately for the purple and white, they could not get past Almeida, who stopped all seven shots to earn herself a shutout.
This is the Mustangs first loss of the season but they will have a chance to start a new streak this upcoming Friday, October 9 in Waterloo. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Warrior Field.
