KINGSTON, Ont. - Western Ultimate came away from the Eastern Championships this past weekend with a fourth place finish for open and seventh place for women's.
The Western men started off their tournament with a strong 3-0 start in cold and windy conditions on the first day of the tournament. After an easy 14-2 win over Nipissing University, they played York in a game to hold seed in their pool. The Mustangs got off to a fast start, going up 3-0 and never looked back, taking the game 10-5.
In their final game of the day they played the University of Toronto in extremely windy conditions that made scoring upwind crucial. Both offences were able to maintain control in the first half until Western broke through to make it 8-6 going into halftime. After half, Western's defence ramped up the pressure and limited the Varsity Blues to one point, going on a 4-0 run and ending the game 12-7.
Ethan Chochinov's huge upwind throws and
Joseph Ip's defence were catalysts for the Western victory.
The men's team began Sunday with a quarterfinal matchup against the Carleton Ravens. Western used its depth and rolled to a comfortable 13-8 victory, setting up a rematch of the Steeltown Classic's quarterfinals against Waterloo. Similar to their previous match, it was a tight and highly contested game. Cutter
Teagan Boyle made some huge grabs and a score by
Andy Lu to break for half were highlights but it wasn't enough, as Western lost 10-9, leaving them in the 3rd place game against Guelph again.
Unfortunately for the Mustangs injuries hampered the team in the bronze medal match, resulting in Guelph claiming a 13-10 win.
Up next, both the open and women's teams will look to qualify in the top eight at the National Championship this Friday, October 16.
