Mustangs continue winning ways with victory over UOIT

OSHAWA, Ont. - Kendra Broad had two goals and an assist as the Western Mustangs Women's Hockey team skated to a 6-2 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks on Friday night.

With the win, the Mustangs have extended their winning streak to four and improve to 7-3 on the season.

Broad continues her stellar campaign, as she has played a major role in the recovery that the Mustangs have had after a slow start to the year.Western backstop Kelly Campbell made 25 saves, with the two goals against coming with the Mustnags down a man.

The first period was action packed and featured two power plays apiece. Tia Kipfer continued her increased offensive production by opening the scoring once again 2:47 seconds into the first period. Linemate April Clark found Kipfer and beat Ridgeback goalie Cassie Charette to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.

Despite the early deficit, the Ridgebacks came back strong. They struck back eight minutes later as Ridgeback forward tailor Campbell beat the opposing Campbell on the power play to tie the game. But with less than two minutes to go in the first frame Broad scored to give the Mustangs the lead for good. Britanny Clapham picked up the helper on the goal.

Campbell faced six shots in the period only allowing the one goal.

Clapham, Evra Levesque, and Broad all scored second period goals to put the game out of reach and secure the win for the Mustangs. Stacey Scott chipped in a third period goal to make the final 6-2 for the Mustangs.

Western will look to extend their winning streak when they continue their eastward road trip against Queen's on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Fans can watch all the action live on OUA.tv
