OTTAWA - After trailing for the first three quarters, Western put together a strong fourth quarter to shock the previously undefeated Gee Gees with a 75-66 victory at Montpetit Hall on Saturday night.
This victory ends the first half of the season and breaks the Mustangs three-game losing streak, bringing their record to 4-3 and placing them in a tie for first place in the OUA West Division Standings with the Windsor Lancers.
The loss was Ottawa's first and shifts their record to 6-1, still good enough for first in the OUA North.
Three Mustangs played a key role in shooting, recording double digits in tonight's contest.
Caroline Wolynski led the way with the game-high 18 points, a title shared with Gee Gee player Catherine Traer.
Maddy Horst followed with 17 points and Heine was next with 10 of her own.
Wolynski had a team-high 10 assists during the game, making her a key player in setting up Mustang plays. Horst led the defensive way with seven rebounds and
Julia Curran followed with six. After 20 minutes of play, Horst was at 100% in her shooting success, only missing one free throw in the first half of the contest.
After Traer, Julia Soriano recorded 16 points for the Gee Gees also making three assists and three steals. Katherine Lemoine led their defence with a whooping 10 rebounds and Kellie Ring followed with six.
The first frame started off strong for the Mustangs, with Horst making eight points in the first ten minutes, including two three-point shots within the first five minutes of play. The Gee Gees kept their scoring as well, establishing their tough plays early with a 11-3 run to open scoring. The home team managed to extend their lead to 10 points and end the first ten minutes with a score of 24-14.
The Mustangs spent the next frame taking turns with the Gee Gees at the basket to keep within 10 points. After the purple and white managed to get within one point, three shots from the three-point line, including back to back shots by Traer, kept the Gee Gees in front of the Mustangs. Although the Mustangs caught up scoring at an even 20 with the Gee Gees in the second frame, their early deficit followed them into the half with a score of 44-34.
In the third frame, Wolynski made six points, including a last second shot that brought her team within six points. For the first time in the game, the Mustangs outshot the Gee Gees and went into the last ten minutes at 57-51, still in Ottawa's favour.
With the victory on the tips of their fingers, the Mustangs toughened up their defence and geared up their offence. After tying the game within three minutes, Heine's open drive to the basket off a steal by Mackenzie Puclickz brought the Mustangs in the lead by two for the first time.
With their perseverance to prevent Gee Gee baskets from then on, the Mustangs only allowed nine points from Ottawa in the last ten minutes. Almost tripling their score in the last frame, their late lead change drove them to the victory at a score of 75-66.
The Mustangs come back from the winter break on Saturday, January 9, 2016 on the road to face the Guelph Gryphons. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. and can be watched live at OUA.tv.
