LENNOXVILLE, Que. – A furious second half comeback fell just short as the McGill Redmen held off Western's late push to defeat the Mustangs 15-11 in the Baggataway Cup Final on Sunday afternoon at Coulter Field.
Ryan Myles led the Mustangs attack in the loss, tallying four goals and two assists. Two other Mustangs recorded hat tricks with
Ryan McCrory and
Cody Ward each scoring three goals in the final two periods.
Sam Neeb rounded out the scoring for the Mustangs, notching one goal and two assists.
After McGill took a 7-1 lead following the first two periods the Mustangs began to mount an impressive comeback over the game's final two frames.
Western recorded four goals in the third, matching McGill's four goals, however it was in the fourth quarter where the purple and white made their final push. Ward got things started shortly after the period began with his first goal of the afternoon. He'd then go on to score two more, trading goals with McGill's Anders Bjella to cut the Redmen's lead to 14-8 with less than 10 minutes left on the clock.
McGill extended that lead to 15-8 with under five minutes remaining, but then the Mustangs offence took over, scoring three goals in the final three minutes with two from Myles and one from McCrory. Unfortunately for the Mustangs the clock continued to tick, and McGill escaped with a 15-11 victory.
