LONDON, Ont. – Despite a goal from
Parker Seymour midway through the second half, two quick goals from Waterloo's Jae Jin Lee gave the Warriors a 2-1 win over the Western Mustangs men's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Field.
Â
"I thought the first half [Waterloo] played a little more aggressively than we did," said Western head coach
Rock Basacco. "We just had a bit of a defensive lapse [in the second half] that lasted for about five to six minutes that caused us a couple of goals. Then you're scrambling to fight back again."
Â
"It's not a great way to play soccer when you're always fighting to try and get a goal back to either tie or to win. We created some good chances, we didn't finish on the chances, and they came back to haunt us."
Â
The loss is the second of the season for the Mustangs, making their record 2-2-2 and putting the team in fifth position in the OUA West Division. Waterloo stands in sixth place with a record of 2-4.
Â
Ten minutes into the second half, Waterloo striker Jae Jin Lee was able to score two back-to-back goals on Western goalie
Ben Cowman. Just under two minutes later, Seymour scored one, but it was the only one the Mustangs would earn.
Â
Waterloo's quick two-goal lead came unexpectedly, as the first half of the game was evenly balanced between the teams. There were few shots throughout the first 45 minutes, just three on net for Waterloo and five on net for Western, but all were stopped. The Mustangs were granted multiple free kicks at the top of the opposing team's 18 yard box, but all were stopped by the Warriors wall of defenders.
Â
With a blank scoreboard heading into the second half, both teams played aggressively while trying to get goals for their respective teams. Along with that tough play came yellow cards, three for Waterloo and one for Western.
Â
Western's sole goal scorer commented on the team's errors and what the team needs to work on going forward.
Â
"We just need to have a more positive start," said Seymour. "It seems that so far in the season it takes us a while to really get into the game, and we kind of have to wait to realize that we're either tied or losing to give us a little push. I just think we need to come out a little harder to start off and try to be more ambitious early on."
Â
The Mustangs have just under a week to prepare for their next game on Saturday, September 13 at 3:15 p.m. when they head to Hamilton to face the McMaster Marauders.
Â
NOTES: Sunday's win by Waterloo was the first time the Warriors have defeated the Mustangs since 2006. Over the past eight seasons Western has had the Warriors number, recording a 12-0-5 record in regular season and playoff contests…
