HAMILTON, Ont. - A strong second half for the McMaster Marauders gave them a 2-0 win against Western at Ron Joyce Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The loss is the Mustangs' second of the season, giving the team a 2-3-2 record and place of sixth on the OUA West Division standings. The win puts McMaster in third place and gives the team a record of 5-2.
Â
It wasn't until the fifty-first minute of the game that a number was placed on the scoreboard. McMaster midfielder Karl Bicamumpaka was responsible for the first point when he put the ball in the Mustang net. Thirty minutes later, Marauder Sasha Ricciuti scored the second and final goal of the game.
Â
While the Marauders were eventually able to get past Western goalie,
Ben Cowman, the Mustangs were able to hold the home team off for some time.
Â
The scoreless first half was evenly played and shot. Both teams saw only two shots on net, with all balls saved by the goalies. Western had more chances from corner kicks than McMaster, tallying three compared to McMaster's one. Unfortunately for the purple and white fans in attendance, no finishes were made from those chances.
Â
With no goals for either team heading into the next half, it was anybody's game. The Marauders ended up taking control, earning seven shots compared to the Mustangs' three. The Mustangs responded with a tough play that led to yellow cards for defenseman
Adam Jaekel and keeper Cowman.
Â
The Mustangs faced lots of pressure in the second half, ultimately resulting in a Western loss. Yet, the Mustangs' work ethic did not go unnoticed. Western defenseman
Aaron Schneebeli was awarded vistor MVP for his work in the back and goal scorer Ricciuti earned himself home MVP.
Â
The Mustangs are back at home tomorrow, Sunday, September 20. They play at 3:15 p.m. on Mustangs Field against the Brock Badgers.
