Win on home turf bumps the Mustangs up to fourth place in OUA West

LONDON, Ont. - Scoring four more goals than their opponents, the Men's soccer team beat the Brock Badgers 6-2 at Mustangs Field this afternoon to achieve their third win of the season.

"Finally the boys were able to put it together," said head coach Rock Basacco. "It just seems they found the combinations to get us into some scoring opportunities, and they final finished, which is nice to see."

The win leaves Western with a 3-3-2 record and bumps the team up to fourth place in the OUA West division. Brock remains in eighth place with their 1-7 record.

Midfielder's, Amad El-Houni and Parker Seymour each contributed a pair of goals, and Mohammed Nefar and Taso Bujouves tallied one each for a sum of six for the Mustangs.

El-Houni started the scoring eleven minutes into the game. Shortly after, Seymour was granted a free kick, which was shot over the Badger wall and into the Brock mesh. Eight minutes later, El-Houni struck again, capitalizing on a great pass from Christian Douglas.

While the Western offense experienced a successful first half, credit is also due to the Mustang defensemen who prevented the Badgers from meeting goalie, Ben Cowman with a shot for the entire first half.

The final half saw more goals from the purple and white as they found the back of the net three more times within the first 22 minutes. However, the Badgers fought back throughout the second half with Arsen Platis and Hemad-Malike Ngoi adding one goal each for Brock.

Western goalie Cowman remained calm, specifically when a handball in the Mustang box meant he'd be facing a penalty shot. Platis of the Brock Badgers stepped up to shoot, yet it wasn't the first time Cowman and Platis had faced off.

"We actually lost to Brock 1-0. They scored on a PK, and it was the same guy," said Cowman. "He had the same run up, so I was just thinking that he was shooting the same way. So I guessed right, and I saved it."

Ultimately, the Badgers were unable to catch up to Western's lead, and the home team ended with a 6-2 victory, nudging the Mustangs up to fourth place in the OUA West.

"Overall we're really, really happy with the result," said coach Basacco. "I know what the team can do and finally it showed today, so it's awesome."

Up next, the Mustangs are back at home on Wednesday, September 23 to face the undefeated Windsor Lancers. The game is set for 8:15 p.m.
