Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - A hat trick for
Taso Bujouves helped the Mustangs to defeat the Algoma Thunderbirds 6-0 on Sunday afternoon at Superior Heights Field.
The win is Western's second of the season and puts the team in third place in the OUA West Division with a record of 2-1-1. With the loss, the Thunderbirds hold ninth place in OUA West with a 0-3-1 record.
Bujouves' three goals topped the scoresheet, while also securing a purple and white win within the first ten minutes of the game.
Nine minutes after the first whistle, he put the ball behind Algoma goalie Nicholas Palazzi to record the game-winning goal. That proved to not be enough for the native of Toronto, as he proceeded to score another goal at the 45-minute mark and the final goal of the game 65 minutes in.
Following
Bujouves' initial goal, the Mustangs continued to play a strong first half. It was an aggressive 45 minutes of play, with two yellow cards going to the home team and one to the visitors, but nothing could tear Western's focus away from adding points to the scoreboard.
The Mustangs turned up the pressure on Algoma's goalies, sending eight shots their way in the first half. With two goals each from El-Houni and
Parker Seymour, along with a goal from
Jacob Peplinski, the teams headed to halftime with a score of 5-0 on the board.
Returning to the field for the final 45 minutes, the Mustangs had a more difficult time putting the ball into the Thunderbird net. Western kept keeper Nicholas Burnie busy with 13 shots, but only El-Houni was able to make the ball meet mesh to secure the 6-0 win.
On the other end of the field, Western goalie
Ben Cowman received only two shots total, stopping both to earn himself a shutout.
The Mustangs return to the field and will attempt to add to their two-game winning streak when they take on the Laurier Golden Hawks in Western territory. Kickoff is set for 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, September 12 at Mustang Field.
