Mustangs repeat as OUA Champions with 6-3 win over Brock

Day Three Recap

AJAX, Ont. - As the rain clouds cleared the Western Mustangs captured their second consecutive OUA championship banner and sixth since the OUA championships inception in 2001 defeating the Brock Badgers 6-3 Sunday afternoon (Oct. 16) at the Ajax Sportsplex.

In the three day championship Western produced an undefeated record while outscoring opponents 45-11.

Mustangs centre fielder Andrew Warner was named the Wilson OUA championship MVP registering an RBI in every game of the three-day tournament while leading in batting average (.571), runs (8), and RBI (10).

In the championship game both Mustangs pitcher Dustin Godden and Badgers pitcher Derek Zwolinski came out on fire delivering two innings of one hit ball each.

However, in the bottom of the third the Western offence put together a rally to jump ahead 6-0 sparked by a two run double from first baseman Jeff Martin forcing the Badgers to their bullpen after just 2.1 innings.

The single explosive inning was all Mustangs starting pitcher Dustin Godden would require to secure the banner winning victory delivering six strikeouts and allowing just two earned runs in eight innings of work.

Day Two Recap

AJAX, Ont. – The Western Mustangs offence continued to fire on all cylinders on day two of the OUA Baseball Championship, defeating the Guelph Gryphons 15-0 to book a spot in Sunday's championship final against the Brock Badgers.

The win over Guelph sets up a rematch with the Badgers, not only from Friday when the Mustangs defeated Brock 12-3, but it will also be a repeat of last year's OUA Final that saw Western come out on top with a 9-4 win.

Western came out strong right out of the gates on Saturday, scoring two runs in the first, three in the second, and five in the third to jump out to an early 10-0 lead.

After a scoreless fourth inning from both sides, the Mustangs decided to put a few more runs up on the board, bringing four runners around to score in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the sixth to take the 15-0 win.

All-Stars Jeff Martin and Hayden Woodley led the Western offence on Saturday, with Martin going 3-3 with five runs scored and two runs batted in, while Woodley also went 3-3 with one run and three RBI.

Not to be outdone by his teammates at the plate, Alex Lamont had a fantastic day on the mound, allowing only one hit and five walks, while striking out eight batters across seven innings of shutout ball.

The Mustangs and Badgers will square off for the OUA title on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. With the OUA Championship being a double elimination format, Western can claim their second consecutive championship with a victory, while a Badgers win will see the two teams face off again at 3 p.m.

Day One Recap

AJAX, Ont. – The Western Mustangs got the defence of their 2015 OUA title off to a great start on Friday, defeating both the Waterloo Warriors and Brock Badgers on the first day of competition at the OUA Championship.

The Mustangs first game of the day saw the purple and white take down the Waterloo Warriors by a 15-5 score in seven innings.

Despite ending up as an offensive showcase for the Mustangs, the game started out with the two sides trading runs, with Western holding a 4-3 edge after three innings. The Mustangs broke things open in the fourth, bringing four players around to score.

The purple and white continued to put points on the board throughout the game's remaining innings, scoring one run in both the fifth and sixth frames, before securing the win with a five-run seventh inning.

Andrew Warner led the Mustangs offence in the win, going 5-5 at the plate, with four runs scored and seven runs batted in. The centre fielder recorded two doubles, two singles, and a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning that put Western in the lead for good. Turner Spears also had a strong game at the plate, going 4-5 with three runs scored and one RBI.

Leo Labine picked up the win on the mound, allowing only two earned runs in six innings pitched, while walking four and striking out eight. Ryne Weppler took the loss for Waterloo, allowing eight earned runs and 11 hits in 3.2 innings pitched.

Game two featured another chapter in the Western-Brock rivalry, with the Mustangs coming out on top by a 12-3 score.

The Badgers jumped out in front 2-0 in the top of the first inning, and extended that lead to 3-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth before the Mustangs responded with a five-run inning to take a 6-3 lead.

The purple and white kept things going in the seventh, as Damon Crumplen's double knocked in three runs, with Warner, Hayden Woodley, and David Panchyshyn all crossing the plate.

Not satisfied with having nine runs on the board, Western added another three in the eighth inning off singles from Warner and Eric Beauchesne to secure the 12-3 victory.

Ryan Beckett recorded the win for Western, throwing 8.1 innings with only three earned runs, three hits, and seven walks with nine strikeouts. Reece Huntley came on in the ninth to close things out, retiring both batters he faced.

Action will continue on Saturday, with the second day of the OUA Championship set to begin at 10 a.m.
