Mustangs offence shines in 4-2 win over Badgers

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – Two goals from Kym Van Duynhoven helped the Western Mustangs to a 4-2 win over the Brock Badgers on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Mustangs move into a tie for first place in the OUA West Division with a 7-0-4 record, alongside the York Lions. The Badgers move to 4-6-1 on the season and are in sixth place in the OUA West.

After a strong win this past Friday, the Mustangs kept the momentum rolling against the Badgers early in the match, with Van Duynhoven scoring just five minutes into the game. The defender would continue to spark the offence later in the half, scoring another goal to help seal the victory for the purple and white.

Two other Mustangs tallied goals against the Badgers, as defender Sonja Cvetkovic and striker Julia Crnjac each scored one goal apiece. Cvetkovic also added an assist to Crnjac's goal, helping to facilitate the offence. Crnjac's goal gives her eight on the season and leaves her tied for fourth in OUA scoring. Julianna Guglietti got the win in net for the purple and white, making seven saves in the victory.

Van Duynhoven's goal gave Western the early advantage, and the Mustangs did not slow down from there. The remainder of the first half saw Cvetkovic score midway through the frame, soon to be followed by Van Duynhoven's second goal of the game.

The Mustangs headed into the second half with a strong 3-0 advantage, but that lead would quickly shrink due to two goals coming the second half from Brock's Kristen Bettencourt and Megan Salisbury in the 51st and 58th minutes respectively. Despite the strong Badgers run, Crnjac rounded out the scoring on the day with a late goal that secured the 4-2 win for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs will be back in action this Friday, October 7, when they head on the road to take on the Windsor Lancers. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
