LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs played to a 0-0 draw with the Guelph Gryphons on Thursday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex, continuing Western's undefeated regular season.
With the draw, Western moves to 9-0-6 on the year, putting the team into a tie with the York Lions for first place in the OUA West Division, although the Lions have a game in hand on the Mustangs. Guelph remains in third place with a 9-2-4 mark, with one regular season contest remaining.
Coming off of a two-game winning streak which saw the Mustangs shut out both Laurier and Waterloo, the Mustangs continued their impressive defensive effort once again against Guelph, playing through a hard-fought battle without allowing a single shot on goal.
Western controlled things in the first half, outshooting their opponents 7-1, and earning two corner kicks while holding the Gryphons to none in the frame. The defensive battle continued in the final 45 minutes, with Guelph's Elizabeth Brenneman turning aside all three shots sent her way to preserve the 0-0 draw.
Strong defensive performances have become commonplace for the purple and white, as this game marked their ninth shutout of the season, giving Western the second most in the country.
The Mustangs will be back in action this Sunday, October 23 when they travel to Toronto to take on the York Lions in their regular season finale. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
