Mustangs edge ahead of Golden Hawks for 2-1 victory

LONDON, Ont. -  In a game where goals were hard to come by, the Mustangs edged just ahead of Laurier to secure a 2-1 victory for the team's third win of the season.  All three goals in the Western-Laurier matchup took place within a five-minute burst in the third period, with Connor Chartier netting the game-winner.

"The guys are buying into the game and they're doing the little things right and consistently and its paying off," said assistant Coach Steve Benedetti after the game.

The first period went back and forth, as Western managed a few more chances than Laurier, but for the most part the period was a tight defensive battle.

The second period brought with it more excitement, particularly at the end when there was a flurry of penalties. For the Mustangs, that meant a two-man disadvantage that was killed off thanks to goaltender Greg Dodds.

Laurier goalie Colin Furlong matched Dodds shot for shot, including a couple key saves on Rob Polesello's chances at the beginning of the period.

However, each goalie finally broke in third period.

Laurier capitalized quickly on a power play when Jarryd Leung potted a rebound off a hard shot from Derek Schoenmakers, but that lead would prove to be short-lived. Just 20 seconds later, Spenser Cobbold answered for Western to tie the game at one.

Two minutes after that marker, Connor Chartier netted the final goal of the game to give Western a narrow one-point lead.

Dodds again came through at the end of the period, making one huge glove save off of a faceoff, and another diving save with less than three minutes left - seemingly deflating the Golden Hawks' attack.

"[The defence] did a great job again, they're just boxing guys out and letting me see the puck which is all I ask from them, and they're helping clear the rebounds that I do leave there," said Dodds about the assistance at the blue line.

The Mustangs are back on the ice tomorrow night in Windsor to take on the Lancers at the South Windsor Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., with fans able to catch all the action live on OUA.tv.
