Mustangs suffer first loss of the season after battle with Lakers

NORTH BAY, Ont. – Saving all 27 shots she faced, Nipissing goaltender Jacqueline Rochefort held off the Mustangs and helped the Lakers secure a 2-0 victory Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Gardens.

The loss for the purple and white is their first of the season, after winning their first two games against Guelph and Windsor. They now sit seventh in the OUA. Meanwhile, Nipissing remains undefeated through four games to sit first in the standings.

The Mustangs had their best chance to score in the first period, outshooting their opponents nine to eight and earning the only power play chance of the frame. It was the Lakers who opened the scoring, however, when forward Taylor Murphy scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Brooklyn Irwin and Kaley Tienhaara.

In the second period, Western once again outshot Nipissing but conceded a power play goal with less than a minute remaining in the period. Capitalizing on a late penalty, Bronwin Bolduc scored her OUA leading fourth goal of the season to give her team a two goal advantage heading into the third period.

The Mustangs have now given up power play goals in all three games so far this season, going 1-2 throughout the evening.

The third period saw a total of 19 shots fired at both goaltenders but both Rochefort and her Mustang counterpart Tareya Webster stood tall as no goals were scored. Making her first start of the season, Webster made 22 saves in the losing effort while Rochefort earns her first shutout of the season.

The Mustangs will look to get back to their winning ways tomorrow when they travel to Sudbury to take on the Laurentian Voyageurs at 1:50 p.m. at the Countryside Arena.
