LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs got out to a fast start on Saturday, scoring seven goals in the first quarter en route to a 20-12 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues in a Baggataway Cup Qualifer on Saturday afternoon at TD Stadium.
With the win the Mustangs are headed back to the Baggataway Cup Championship as the West's top ranked team.
Tomas Masterson led the Mustangs in scoring on Saturday, tallying three goals and three assists for six points. Five other Mustangs also found the back of the net on multiple occasions, with
Nikolai Farrus and
Reid Reinholdt scoring three goals each, while
Ryan McCrory,
Cody Ward, and
Rowan Kelly netted two apiece.
Western jumped out to an early lead with seven goals in the first quarter. The purple and white didn't slow down in the second frame however, adding nine points to the scoreboard to take a 16-3 lead after two quarters.
The Varsity Blues came back stronger in the third and fourth, tallying nine goals compared to four from the Mustangs, however it wouldn't be enough as Western took the 20-12 win and a spot in the Baggataway Cup.
Western will now turn their attention to the Baggataway Cup Championship, being hosted from November 4-6 by the Brock Badgers. As the top seed in the West, the Mustangs earn a bye directly into the semi-finals on Saturday.
