OSHAWA, Ont. – A hat trick from Mike Robinson led the UOIT Ridgebacks to a 6-0 win over the Western Mustangs on Friday night at the Campus Ice Centre.
The Ridgebacks took control early and controlled the majority of the play on Friday, going up 2-0 after 20 minutes and taking a 6-0 lead after the second period. UOIT goalie Tyson Teichmann recorded the first shutout of his OUA career in the victory, turning aside all 24 shots he faced.
In just a 20-second span in the first, the Mustangs found themselves trailing by two goals to the Ridgebacks. After a few good opportunities to open the frame, Robinson finally found the back of the net at 16:24 of the period on the heels of a speedy rush led by defenceman Danny Elser.
Then, without further warning, and just 20 seconds later, Ryan Doucette blasted a shot through traffic from the point that beat Mustangs goalie
Greg Dodds.
Early in the second the offensive onslaught continued. Ben Blasko streaked up the ice, made a nifty move to beat the Western defender, and picked the top corner on Dodds to put the Ridgebacks up 3-0.
After Loren Ulett then tipped a shot from the blueline home,
Luke Peresinni came on in relief of Dodds.
Unfortunately for the Mustangs, the Ridgebacks didn't let up from there, as just over four minutes later Robinson found a rebound and a wide open net smiling at him, and he made no mistake.
With seven minutes left in the period, Robinson tacked on his third goal to complete the hat trick.
The Mustangs will look to get back on the winning track tomorrow night, when they head to Kingston to take on the Queen's Gaels. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m., and can be seen live on OUA.tv
