GUELPH, Ont. – A pair of goals from Kaitlyn Lowy helped lead the Guelph Gryphons over the Western Mustangs by a 3-2 score on Saturday afternoon at the Gryphon Centre.
With the win, the Gryphons exacted some revenge on the Mustangs, who handed them their only loss to date in an overtime thriller to open the season at Thompson Arena. Guelph added to their lead in the OUA standings, while Western moves to 3-1-5 on the year.
It didn't take long for the first goal of the game to be produced as Gryphon forward Kaitlyn Lowy, who scored twice in her team's last game against York, scored her sixth goal of the season
just 33 seconds into the game.
Western did well to not be shaken up by the early goal, scoring two goals of their own in a three-minute span later in the period. Forward
Lyndsay Kirkham continued her point-per-game pace by factoring into both goals. She earned an assist on
Amanda Pereira's second goal of the season – her first since her three-point performance against Guelph in the season opener – and gave Western the lead on with her OUA-best eighth goal of the year.
The Gryphons struck back early in the second period and it was once again Lowy who scored, this time 36 seconds into the period to tie the game at 2-2. Despite being outshot 12-6 in the period and committing two more penalties in the second as they did in the first, the Mustangs were able to limit the damage, conceding only one goal and heading into the final frame tied 2-2 as they did in their first matchup with Guelph.
Western continued to be outshot by Guelph, and it finally caught up to them midway through the period when second year forward Karli Shell tallied her second goal of the season to give the Gryphons the lead. The Mustangs had a late opportunity to draw the game even after rookie forward Kristen Jay committed a match penalty with less than five minutes remaining in the game, but goalkeeper Valeria Lamenta and the Gryphons shut the door to preserve the 3-2 win.
Lamenta made 17 stops in the win, while
Katie Jacobs turned aside 32 of 35 shots in her third straight start for the purple and white.
The Mustangs return to the Thompson Arena for the first time in November tomorrow to take on the Brock Badgers at 4 p.m. Fans can catch all the action live on OUA.tv
