ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The Western Mustangs are the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association champions after defeating the Trent Excalibur by an 11-7 score at the Baggataway Cup on Sunday afternoon.
The title is the fourth in program history, and the first championship for the Mustangs since 2001. Sunday's win not only avenges last year's loss in the Baggataway Cup final, but also ends the Mustangs season on a 14-game winning streak, with their only loss coming in the team's season opener back in September.
Ryan Myles led the Mustangs attack on Sunday, scoring five goals and recording one assist to earn player of the game honours. He was also named the tournament MVP after totaling eight goals and two assists in two games.
The midfielder was also named to the All-Tournament team, alongside goaltender
Manraj Nijjar,
Keagan Croley at long stick midfield, and attacker
Cody Ward.
The first of Myles' tallies opened the game's scoring, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. The two teams traded goals until Myles recorded back-to-back strikes to complete his hat trick and put the Mustangs up 5-3. Trent added a goal before the end of the second quarter to leave the Mustangs with a 5-4 lead at the half.
Western came out strong to start the third quarter, firing off three straight goals, one each from Myles, Ward, and
Reid Reinholdt, before Trent came back with two of their own.
Jackson Hulbert rounded out the scoring in the frame, giving Western a 9-6 lead heading into the fourth.
Trent added one more goal in the fourth, however it wasn't enough as Ward scored twice more for the Mustangs to secure the 11-7 win.
Nijjar got the win in net for the Mustangs, recording 13 saves in the victory.
