Mustangs shut out in loss to Varsity Blues

TORONTO – A pair of second period goals led the Toronto Varsity Blues over the Western Mustangs by a 2-0 score on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Arena.

With the win Toronto overtakes the Mustangs in the standings with 12 points through seven games. Western falls back to .500 with a 3-1-4 record through eight games.

Both goalkeepers were solid in the first period, with Western starter Katie Jacobs – making her second start in back-to-back days – and Toronto starter Valencia Yordanov making 11 saves each to help their respective teams keep their opponents scoreless.

The Blues struck twice in a 1:10 span early in the second period to build a 2-0 lead. Rookie forward Jessica Maggioni broke the deadlock with her first career OUA goal, and veteran forward Katherine Gale scored her first goal of the season on the power play less than two minutes later.

Jacobs made 17 saves and the Mustangs kept Toronto scoreless for the rest of the period, including killing two more penalties, but they only generated seven shots of their own and failed to capitalize on their two power play chances.

Toronto continued to put the puck on the net in the third period, but Jacobs stood tall for her team, helping her team keep Toronto scoreless on back-to-back penalty kills and saving all 15 shots she faced. She finished her night saving 43 of 45 total shots against but was outdone by Yordanov, who stopped 29 shots to record her third shutout of the season. She now places in the OUA top 5 in goals against per game and save percentage.

The shutout ended defenseman Anthea Lasis' three game point streak and forward Lindsay Kirkham's two game goal streak.

The Mustangs play another set of consecutive games next weekend, starting with the last of three straight road matchups against the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, November 12 at 2 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre, before coming home to host the Brock Badgers on Sunday afternoon at Thompson Arena.
