LONDON, Ont. – Fourth-year midfielder
Stefanie Di Tella recorded a season-high three goals to lead the Western Mustangs to a 5-1 win over the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday afternoon at Warrior Field.
With the win, Western remains in second place in the OUA West Division standings, chasing York's undefeated record with a 4-0-2 record of their own. With Waterloo's loss to the Mustangs, the Warriors remain in eighth place in the OUA West with an 0-4-1 record.
After netting her first goal of the season against Algoma last weekend, Di Tella continued her scoring display on Sunday with three goals in the first half. The Mississauga native was invovlved in all four of Western's first half goals, assisting on Western's third goal late in the frame.
Two other Mustangs found the back of the net in a strong win for Western as veterans
Amanda Boyle and
Julia Crnjac chipped in one goal each to help seal the victory. Both Boyle and Crnjac now have seven goals on the year, good for second on the OUA leaderboard.
Western's first goal came from Di Tella only three minutes into the match, and the offence did not slow down from there. Western managed to create 11 shots in the first half against Waterloo's goalie Findley Dunn, leading to two more goals from Di Tella and one from Boyle late in the half.
The second half was more tightly contested, as Western was held to two shots throughout the rest of the game, compared to five from Waterloo. Laura Kay put the Warriors on the board late in the second 45, but Crnjac would chip in one final goal for the Mustangs with less than two minutes to go in the game to give the purple and white a 5-1 win.
The Mustangs will be back in action next Sunday, September 18, when they travel back to Waterloo to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
