Mustangs post strong results at Canadian Eastern University Ultimate Championships

KINGSTON, Ont. - The Mustangs kicked off their competitive season last weekend with the Canadian Eastern University Ultimate Championships, coming away with top five finishes for both the women's team and open team.

The women's team took fourth place after two days of tough competition, meeting Carleton B, Brock, Queen's, Guelph, Toronto, and Ottawa along the way.

Carla Rawson was the difference maker in the matchup against Carleton, consistently sending deep throws and allowing the team to shut out the Ravens by a score of 15-0.

Moving into the game against Brock, the Mustangs continued to thrive to come away with a 15-1 victory.

Western then faced off against their toughest opponent of the day in Queen's University. Despite a hard-fought game that saw Julia Peden and Agnes Chu aggressively fight for defensive ground, the Mustangs were unable to top the eventual champs and came away with an 11-8 loss.

Day two saw the Mustangs bounce back from their loss to Queen's with a massive upset over Guelph, controlling the pace of the game on their way to a 13-6 victory. Sabrina Trung's aggressive defence and overwhelming speed contributed was a major contributing factor in the team's victory.

The semi-final contest against Toronto saw Izzy Bedard and Christine Jurchyuk make connection after connection, running flawless plans in the end zone. Their performance wasn't enough to capture the game however, as Toronto walked away with a 15-9 victory.

In the bronze medal game the Mustangs took on Ottawa, but were narrowly edged out by a score of 8-6 for fourth place.

The open team started their day off against Brock to come away with a 13-8 victory, with Teagan Boyle going up in the end zone multiple times to come down with the disc.

Next, Western faced off Queen's B, and posted a dominant 15-1 win with unwavering defence and efficient offensive flow.

The Mustangs then lined up against Ottawa B and Carleton to come away with two more wins.

Western took down Ottawa by a score of 13-7, with Brandon Lue making a highlight reel worthy dive in the end zone for a point. The Mustangs continued to dominate in their match with Carleton, coming away with a 13-0 victory thanks to Keith Chow and Geoffrey Seeman's impeccable offensive flow.

Day two saw the Mustangs pick up a 11-9 loss in the Quarterfinals to McGill, despite a strong showing by Phil Turner. The loss didn't dampen their spirits, as they moved into the consolation bracket to add another two wins against York and Ryerson. At the end of the day the team finished in fifth place overall, putting them in a good position to advance to a medal game in their upcoming contest in Hamilton.
