LONDON, Ont. – A 16-point performance from
Luc Hansen-Boucher helped lead the Western Mustangs to a 50-29 win over the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
"Today was the best we've executed all year, I'm very happy," said Mustangs head coach
Tom Dolezel. "'Less is more' I always say and today they executed it. Guys understood where they fit into the offensive system and they were making the right decisions to get the ball where we needed to on the field."
The win gives Western a 5-2 record heading into the final week of the regular season, while Brock moves to 4-3 on the year.
Hanson-Boucher had a standout game for the Mustangs on Saturday, recording two tries and three converts to lead all players with 16 points. Four other Mustangs registered tries in the win, with
John Fazio,
Michael Coldwells,
Aidan Potts,
Trevor Noskiewicz, and
Keegan Matheson recording one each.
"I feel great about how we played, everything came together," said Hanson-Boucher. "Despite the rain we weren't dropping many balls, ball was going to hand, we were getting out wide where we needed to go. Great support runs…can't complain about anything on the field."
Spencer Karn led the Badgers with nine points off one penalty goal and three converts, while Jackson Amos, Ryan Hickey, Jeremy Brownridge, and Zach White each recorded tries against the Mustangs.
Western didn't wait long to open the scoring on Saturday, with Noskiewicz putting the Mustangs on the board just over two minutes into the contest.
The Badgers responded with a penalty goal from Karn before Potts notched Western's second try of the day to give the purple and white a 12-3 lead following a successful convert from Hansen-Boucher.
Western extended that lead just over two minutes later, with Hanson-Boucher scoring on a nice run before
Federico Cisneros Sanchez added the convert to give Western a 16-point advantage.
The game's back-and-forth pace continued with Hickey scoring a try from the Badgers shortly thereafter, with Jackson Amos adding another in the 37th minute.
Fazio capped off an exciting first half with a try of his own in the 40th minute to give the Mustangs a 26-15 lead after 40 minutes.
Things didn't slow down in the second half, with Brock managing to get over the line for a try in the 44th minute, before Western responded with a try from Coldwells at the 52-minute mark.
Hansen-Boucher added another try less than three minutes later, getting the ball near midfield and going on a fantastic scoring run before following it up with a successful convert to put Western up 36-22.
Brock fired back with a try from White in the 62nd minute with Karn providing the convert, but unfortunately for the Badgers that would be as close as things would get.
A penalty try put seven more points on the board for the Mustangs before Matheson closed out the scoring with a try in the 74th minute to give Western a 50-29 win.
Western now has one game remaining on the regular season schedule, a showdown with the Guelph Gryphons on the road on Friday, October 20.
"I feel really great [about where the team is right now]," said Hansen-Boucher. "This whole season we've been on an upward trajectory, so it's just a matter of tying that last knot, beating Guelph, and going into the playoffs with high hopes."
"Guelph's is in second place, they're one of the top teams obviously, so we have a big challenge ahead of us," said Dolezel. "I think we can beat them, but it's going to take a lot of focus, and I think we need to bring a lot of what we did here and even make it better."
