ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - After trailing 2-1 entering the final frame, the Brock Badgers scored four times in the third period to take a 5-2 win over the Western Mustangs on Saturday night at the Seymour Hannah Centre.
The loss gives Western a 1-4-0 record so far this season, with the Badgers improving to 2-3-1 following the win.
An agressive Badgers power play proved to be a difference maker on Saturday night, as both the tying and game-winning goals came with the man advantage. Jeff Corbett and Matt MacLeod provided the power play markers, with Brayden Stortz adding an empty net goal, while Mack Lemmon tallied two goals in the win.
Kolten Olynek continued the strong start to his OUA career, scoring in his third connective game, while Matt Watson followed up on his first goal as a Mustang on Thursday with another one against the Badgers.
The first period was quiet for both squads as Western maintained puck possession in the offensive zone for the majority of the period. Adam Sinclair had a great opportunity to give Western their first goal on a two on one rush that ended up ultimately going wide.
At the start of the second, Western came out strong scoring a goal less than two minutes into the period. First-year defenceman David Eccles capitalized on a shot from behind the net, sending the puck through the Windsor netminder's legs where Olynek was there to tap it in giving Western the lead.
Brock's Mack Lemmon buried a backhanded pass four minutes later from teammates Brandon O'Quinn and Jeff Corbet to tie the game at 1-1. Watson put Western back in the lead once again at the eight minute mark when he netted a wrist shot from slot to give the purple and white a 2-1 advantage going into the third.
Early in the third, a hooking call would put the Mustangs on the PK and allow Corbett to score his first goal of the season and tie things up at 2-2.
The Badgers power play unit struck again with a little over two minutes left in the game as MacLeod capitalized on a power play rush that would put the puck past goaltender Dan Davies and give his team the 3-2 lead.
The Mustangs tried to take things into overtime after pulling Davies to get the extra attacker and create some much needed offence. However a shot from centre ice from Stortz would give the Badgers some breathing room before Lemmon finished things off with another empty netter to give the Badgers a 5-2 win.
Until, a shot fired from centre ice by Brock's Brayden Stortz would give the team an empty net goal and some breathing room with the 4-2 lead. In a last effort attempt, Western decided to pull Davies for a second time, with 46 seconds left in the period. Brock would repeat to score a second empty netter that would gave Mack Lemmon of the Badgers his second goal of the game and his team a winning 5-2 final score.
Western is back in action next Friday, November 3, at South Windsor Arena, where they will look to bounce back against the Windsor Lancers. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. and fans can catch the game live on OUA.tv
