Mustangs bounce back with win over Lancers

WINDSOR, Ont. – Goals from four different goal scorers and a 33-save performance from rookie netminder Zach Springer led the Western Mustangs to a 4-2 win over the Windsor Lancers on Friday night at the South Windsor Arena.

The Mustangs currently sit with a 2-4 record, and are tied with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues for ninth in the OUA West Division. The Lancers exit this game with a 2-4-1 record, and place just ahead of the Mustangs in the OUA leaderboard.

Springer got the start in his first game as a Mustang, turning aside all but two shots in the win. Richard Blake took the loss for the Lancers, stopping 26 of 29 shots on Friday night.

Western's first three goals of the game all came from players who tallied their first goals of the season in the win, with Kyle Petit, Rob Polesello, and Ray Huether all hitting the back of the net before Trevor Warnaar iced the game with an empty netter for his fourth goal of the year.

The Lancers punched in the first goal of the game just past the eight minute mark of the opening frame before Western quickly responded with goals from Petit and Polesello to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

Neither team could solve the other in the second period until the the Lancers tied the purple and white with a goal from Jonathan Tecce 14 minutes into the frame. Once again, the Mustangs didn't wait long to answer back, with Huether sending the puck across the line just 59 seconds later to put Western up 3-2.

Warnaar then closed things out for the Mustangs with an empty net marker in the final minute of play to give Western the 4-2 victory.

The Mustangs will return home for their next contest, as they'll take on the Laurier Golden Hawks tomorrow night at Thompson Arena. Game time is set for 7 p.m., and fans can watch all the action live on OUA.tv
