Mustangs host Varsity Blues and Rams in first homestand of the regular season

11/1/2017 6:50:00 PM

The Mustangs will look to move above .500 after splitting their first two games of the season, falling to the Brock Badgers this past Wednesday before earning their first win of the year over the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday.

The Mustangs were simply outshot by one of the OUA's most competitive programs in Brock, as Western was unable to slow down the Badger's scoring display. Brock went 6-11 from beyond the arc in the first half, overwhelming the purple and white with a scoring barrage. The Mustangs began to find their footing in the third quarter, but it was ultimately not enough as the Badgers walked away with an 83-58 victory.

It was a different story on the weekend for the purple and white, as the Mustangs' offence found its rhythm early against the Warriors. Both teams struggled to pull ahead throughout the game, but a fourth quarter run by Western, buoyed by a strong defensive effort, put the Mustangs in front for good, earning the 69-62 win.

Toronto will come into their matchup with Western following an 84-69 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds this past Saturday, holding a 1-0 record to start the season. The Varsity Blues put on an impressive scoring display as they cruised to the 15-point victory in their first road game of the year.

Following a season which saw Toronto finish with an 11-8 record, the team showed signs of improvement through one game with a roster featuring a multitude of young talent. For such a young roster, Toronto took care of the ball well in their season-opener against Algoma, turning the ball over just seven time throughout the game. The Mustangs will hope to slow down a Toronto team that put up notable scoring numbers in their opening regular season game and throughout the preseason.

Toronto will be led once again by veteran guard Reilly Reid, who scored 18 points in his season-debut this past week. Forward Daniel Johansson will also be a focus for the purple and white, as he put up 15 points and eight rebounds against the Thunderbirds. Toronto head coach John Campbell will be leading the team for his fifth season with the program following eleven seasons with the Dalhousie Tigers.

Western vs. Ryerson – Saturday, November 4 at 8:00 p.m.
NOTE: There will be no webcast for this game, we apologize for the inconvenience

Ryerson will enter Saturday's game after notching their first win of the season in an 84-58 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds this past Friday. The Rams, who enter this season as back-to-back OUA champions, will hope to continue this early momentum into their road matchup in Alumni Hall.

After going 17-2 last year, Ryerson will hope to remain in contention as one of the strongest teams the OUA has to offer. The Rams were not only efficient on the offensive end in their first win of the season, but proved to once again be on of the best defensive teams in the division, holding the Thunderbirds to a league-best 58 points while racking up eight blocks on the night. Western will look to limit their turnovers and value each possession if they hope to keep up with the Ryerson offence.

Ryerson will be led by guard Roshane Roberts, who dropped in 16 points to go along with six rebounds in the contest against Algoma. Roberts, who averaged just 6.5 PPG last season, will be looking to keep up his increased point production after being given a much larger role this season. The Rams will be led by head coach Roy Rana, who's been with the team since 2009, and with experience coaching at a national level, Rana remains one of the sharpest minds in OUA basketball.
