Mustangs head to the nation's capital to take on Gee-Gees and Ravens

11/15/2017 12:07:00 PM

After a three-game homestand, the Mustangs will be heading out on a four-game road trip, starting with a pair of games in Ottawa as they look to earn a couple of road wins against the Gee-Gees and Ravens. The Mustangs will look to continue their momentum from last week, following a 15-point victory over the Windsor Lancers last Friday in Alumni Hall.

The purple and white currently hold a 3-2 record through the first five games of the season, as they sit in second in the OUA West division beneath the undefeated Brock Badgers, who lead the division at 6-0.

It was a complete team-effort by the Mustangs on Friday night against the Lancers, as five players scored in double-figures for the purple and white. Despite the collective offensive contributions for the Mustangs, it was the Western defence that would ultimately earn them the victory, holding a strong shooting Windsor team to just 30.4% shooting from beyond the arc, while outscoring the Lancers 27-6 in points off turnovers. The Mustangs pulled away in the second half in a 93-78 win that they hope will carry them into this road trip with confidence.

The Gee-Gees will head into Friday's afternoon matchup against the Mustangs with an impressive 3-1 record so far this year after a recent win over the Waterloo Warriors. However, despite sitting second in the OUA East division standings, Ottawa has had a relatively easy schedule to begin their season in comparison to Western, who has already faced, and beaten, elite OUA-talent in Ryerson and Windsor.

The Gee-Gees will enter Friday's game with one of the more dependable offences in the OUA. The Ottawa offence has taken care of the ball well through their first four games, ranking top-five in the nation in turnovers per game, an area that the Mustangs have struggled with to begin the year. The Gee-Gees also shoot a respectable 50.9% from the field while putting up 88.3 points per game. The team has also been efficient slowing down opposing offences, sitting top-ten in points allowed per game, but has done so against subpar offensive teams. Friday afternoon will be a chance for both Ottawa and Western to legitimize themselves as significant OUA competition.

Ottawa will be lead by Jean Emmanuel Pierre-Charles, who is leading the team in scoring with 15.8 PPG as a fifth-year forward. Pierre-Charles has been invaluable for the Gee-Gees this season, also leading them in rebounding with 9.0 per game. Guard Brandon Robinson has helped carry the scoring load for Ottawa alongside Pierre-Charles with 13.0 PPG and 4.5 APG.

Western at Carleton – Saturday, November 18 at 8:00 p.m. - Watch live at OUA.tv

The Ravens will head into their Saturday night matchup against the purple and white boasting an undefeated 4-0 record on the season, their most recent victory coming in 36-point win on the road against the Laurier Golden Hawks. This Raven's season has been essentially what was expected coming off of a 19-0 record last year, beating Western by a 22-point margin in their only regular season meeting.

Carleton has displayed virtually no weaknesses throughout the course of their first four games this season, ranking first in points per game, points allowed per game, assists per game, rebounding margin, field goals made per game, and opponents' field goal percentage. The Ravens' offence has been mediocre shooting from deep, but they also refrain from shooting beyond the arc if possible, as they know and play through their strengths. Western's best bet will be to try to force the Carleton offence to score from the perimeter and limit their chances at the rim.

The Ravens will be lead by third-year guard Yasiin Joseph, who leads the team in scoring with 15.8 PPG on 48% shooting. Joseph has been complimented by veteran forward Cam Smythe, who has put up 13 PPG on 66.1% shooting, putting points up with efficiency. However, Carleton will be looking to utilize their entire roster against the purple and white, as they have all season long.
