Mustangs bounce back with win over Laurier

WATERLOO, Ont. – A pair of goals from April Clark, the OUA's leading scorer, carried the Western Mustangs over the Laurier Golden-Hawks for a 3-1 win on Saturday afternoon at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.

The win allows the Mustangs to bounce back from their two-game losing streak, placing them at 5-1-2-2 and putting them back in second place in the rankings. The Golden Hawks sit at 1-0-5-1.

Clark's two goals preserved her ranking as the leading scorer in the league, pushing her three goals ahead of the next highest scoring athlete. Evra Levesque netted the Mustangs' other goal of the game, while Laurier's lone goal was scored by forward Aynsley Hall.

Western applied solid offensive pressure from the first whistle to allow Clark to get on the board only five minutes into the first frame, with help from teammates Amanda Pereira and Beatrice Dufour.

Less than five minutes later, Levesque scored the Mustangs insurance marker off a pass from Megan Taylor and Shailyn Waites.

The Golden-Hawks switched from goaltender Cohen Myers to Hannah Miller after the second goal in an attempt to slow the stream of purple and white points. Miller is one of the best ranked goaltenders in the league, holding the highest save percentage (.967) and the lowest goals-against average (.97).

Laurier's Aynsley Hall scored their only goal of the game early in the second frame off of a wild bounce. With five minutes left in the period, Clark netted her second of the night and the first goal on Miller, to extend Western's lead to 3-1.

Clark's goal would be the last of the game, as Tareya Webster and Miller both stood tall throughout the final frame to prevent any more goals and preserve Western's 3-1 lead.

The Mustangs will be on the road again for their next match against Windsor, taking place on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Fans can catch all the action live at OUA.tv.
