Mustangs triumph with 2-1 victory over Lancers

WINDSOR, Ont. – Goaltenders Tareya Webster and Molly Jenkins kept the score close throughout the game, making 30 and 35 saves respectively, but a second period goal from Rachel Armstrong allowed the Mustangs to secure a 2-1 victory against the Lancers on Friday night at South Windsor Arena.

With the win, Western surpasses Guelph in the standings and now occupies third place in the league, sitting with a record of 6-1-2-2. Windsor remains tied with Laurier for last place, holding a 0-1-8-2 record.

Lindsey O'Neill scored her first goal of the season, and the first Mustang goal of the night, while Armstrong netted the game winning goal early in the second period. The Lancers' sole goal was scored by Reagan Kaufman.

The Mustangs dominated play in the first frame, but it was the Lancers who netted the first puck of the game. After difficulty clearing their zone, Windsor managed to rush down the ice, and Reagan Kaufman scored nine minutes in on her team's second shot of the night.

Western did not stay down for long, however, and responded to Windsor's goal before the buzzer signalled the end of the first period.

The Mustangs deked Lancer defenders to make a move on Jenkins. She saved the first shot, but O'Neill persisted and tied up the game with six minutes remaining on the clock.

Three minutes in to the second frame, Western moved ahead of Windsor on the scoreboard. Rachel Armstrong scored her second goal of the season and the last point of the night.

Jenkins and Webster dominated the final frame, neither letting in a single shot. The goalies are largely responsible for the close, and relatively low score, in what was a high-shot game.

Western preserved their lead in the third period deadlock, snagging their seventh win of the season, and ending the tight game 2-1.

The Mustangs are headed to Guelph to face the Gryphons tomorrow night at 7:30 pm. They will be looking to bounce back from their recent matchup with the team, when Guelph thwarted Western's third period comeback for an overtime win.
