Western will be back on the road this upcoming weekend as they head into Toronto and Kingston for their first meetings with the Lions and Gaels this season. Following a pair of losses to Ottawa and Carleton this past weekend, the Mustangs will be looking to improve upon their 3-4 record on the season, as they currently sit tied for second in the OUA West Division.
This past Friday saw the Mustangs narrowly fall to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on the road in a 67-62 loss. Erik Jenkins led the scoring effort for the purple and white, racking up 25 points on the day. Jenkins' effort would keep the Mustangs in the game through the fourth quarter, but a clutch three from Ottawa's Calvin Epistola along with an and-one layup from Jean Emmanuel Pierre gave the Gee-Gees the five-point win.
The following night was a different story for the purple and white, as a second-quarter scoring surge by the 7-0 Carleton Ravens proved to be too much for the Mustangs' defence to handle, opening up a lead and extending it into the half. Western would cut into the deficit early in the fourth, but consistent shooting from the Ravens contained the Mustangs' comeback, leading to Western's 82-61 loss.
Western at York– Friday, November 24 at 8:00 p.m. - Watch live at OUA.tv
York will enter Friday's meeting with the Mustangs with a 2-5 record on the season, as they currently sit on the bottom of the ever-competitive OUA East standings. The Lions are currently suffering a four-game losing skid, with their most recent loss coming at the hands of the Waterloo Warriors by an 11-point margin. This will be the first time Western and York have met since last season, where the Mustangs came out with a 10-point victory in the previous matchup.
York has yet to find success on the offensive end of the floor, shooting 27.1% from beyond the arc and an abysmal 36.9% from the field. However, despite the offensive struggles, the Lions have proven to be respectable on the other side of the ball, sitting top five in blocks per game, while holding opponents to 41.5% from the field. Western will have to rediscover their rhythm on offence and convert on open chances if they hope to beat this Lions team and improve their record.
York will be led by guard Josiah Riley, who is leading the team with 13.6 points per game to go along with four rebounds per contest. Riley will be supported by fellow guard Chevon Brown, who is putting up 11.4 points and three assists per game through the first seven games this season.
Western at Queen's– Saturday, November 25 at 8:00 p.m. - Watch live at OUA.tv
Queen's will enter their contest against Western boasting a 4-2 record on the season, as they currently sit tied for fourth in the OUA East division. The Gaels' most recent victory came in a closely-contested matchup with the Laurier Golden Hawks, where Queen's escaped with a one-point victory. The Gaels got the best of the purple and white in their one and only meeting last season, earning a six-point victory over the Mustangs, as Western will look to redeem themselves with a revamped offence.
However, beating this Queen's team will prove to be a tough task for the purple and white, as the Gaels' offence has been clicking to start the season. Western will challenged to stop an offence which currently ranks top-ten in the country in points per game, third in field goal percentage, and second in assists, displaying stellar ball-movement through their first six games. On the defensive end, Queen's has yet to show many weaknesses either, leading the country in blocks per game and protecting the rim with authority, an area which Western has collected the majority of their points this season.
Queen's will be led by guard Jaz Bains, who leads the team in scoring with an impressive 20.5 points per game on a respectable 45.2% shooting. Despite his proficiency, Bains has not been alone in putting up the points for Queen's this season, as four other Gaels are averaging in double-digits early in the year. Most notably has been forward Tanner Graham, who is averaging 16.0 points per game to go along with 8.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game, protecting the paint and providing contest energy for the Gaels.
