Mustangs return home following back-to-back road wins

11/29/2017 4:15:00 PM

The Mustangs will be back in Alumni Hall for their first game back at home following a four-game road trip. Western earned the win over the York Lions on Friday evening before upsetting the now 5-3 Queen's Gaels on the road the following night.

The two wins over the Lions and Gaels this past weekend improve the Mustangs' record to 5-3 on the season, as they currently sit in second place in the OUA West division, following the undefeated Brock Badgers who boast a 9-0 record on the season.

Friday night's game was a back-and-forth affair between the Lions and the purple and white. Western struggled to stop the York offence through the first half, as the Lions' size advantage became evident. However, the ball-movement of the purple and white proved to be too much for the Lions defence to handle behind a team-high 17 points from Erik Jenkins, leading to a 70-63 victory for the purple and white.

Western kept the momentum from Friday's win going into their matchup on Saturday, as the Mustangs stayed in the game behind the collective efforts of the entire roster, with four players scoring in double-figures on the night. Both teams ran a fast-paced offence throughout the night, but the Mustangs' fourth quarter execution, led by a team-high 18 points from Marko Kovac, would ultimately be too much for the Queen's defence to handle as Western ended their road trip with a pair of victories.

Western vs. Laurentian– Friday, December 1 at 1:00 a.m. - Watch live at OUA.tv

Western will be looking to continue their weekend-momentum against one of the OUA's elite teams in Laurentian. The Voyageurs currently hold a 6-1 record on the season, as they sit third in an extremely competitive OUA East division. Laurentian got the best of the purple and white in their previous meeting last season, as the Mustangs fell by a slim four-point margin. However, this year's Western team has proved their ability to beat top OUA competition, previously beating Ryerson earlier this season.

The Voyageurs have been consistent all season long on both sides of the ball. The team ranks top ten in the country in points per game, field goal percentage, rebounding margin, and free throw percentage. Despite their efficiency on offence, the Voyageurs have found virtually no success from beyond the arc, sitting in last place in the nation in threes per game, but also sitting last in threes attempted per game, understanding their strengths. If Western hopes to slow down the Laurentian scoring, limiting points in the paint will be a key, as taking the ball to the rim has been the fuel for this Voyageur offence.

Laurentian will be led by rookie guard Kadre Gray. Gray has been setting the league on fire in his first year with the Voyageurs, leading the nation in scoring with 26.4 points per game to go along with 8.6 rebounds and 6.1 assists per contest, leading the team in all three categories. Gray has been the unequivocal centrepiece for Laurentian so far this year, and slowing him down will prove to be a near-impossible challenge for the purple and white.

Western vs. Nipissing– Saturday December 2 at 8:00 p.m. - Watch live at OUA.tv

The following night will be a slightly different story for the Mustangs in terms of competition, as they will host the Nipissing Lakers in the second night of a back-to-back. Nipissing currently holds a 4-3 record on the season, good enough for seventh place in the OUA East. However, the Mustangs found themselves blown out by the Lakers in the previous meeting last year in a 19-point loss.

In many ways, the Lakers' statistics mirror that of the Mustangs, as both teams have proven to be average teams on the defensive end of the floor. Nipissing ranks in the top-half of the nation in points allowed per game and around the middle of the pack in rebounding margin as well. The team has shown the ability to shoot from deep, but has struggled to turn that accuracy into consistent point production, averaging just 70.1 points per game. Both teams currently sit around the middle of the pack in the OUA in terms of statistics as well as their records, making this Saturday a competitive matchup between two teams still jostling for position in their respective divisions.

Nipissing will be led by veteran guard Marcus Lewis, who is averaging 18.4 points per game on a respectable 43.2% from the field. Along with his point production, Lewis is averaging 8.6 rebounds per game for the Lakers, leading the team in both categories. He will be complimented by fellow guard Jaaden Lewis, who is averaging 16.9 points per game, and centre Marvin Ngonadi, who has put up 10.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game for the Lakers.
